oobleck

Many thanks to my former coworker, Mary Ellyn, for the link to learn how to make oobleck, as illustrated in this video:

And yes, that noise at the end is my daughter wiping out and hitting her eyebrows on a shelf on the way down ... the bruise should fade in a day or two (or 14).

We used to make this in class to celebrate Dr. Suesse's birthday. Caution: If it gets in Liza's hair she will not like it!

You need to try mixing just a little bit of Borax laundary detergent into Elmers Glue (or generic equivalent). With a little bit of Borax, you get slime. With a lot of Borax, you get a bouncy ball. You can break the cross-linking in the slime with a little bit of acid.

We were talking about colloids yesterday at work. Remembering your video, I brought up the colloid formed from cornstarch and water. This lead to a nice discussion on the mixture and how the solids get tangled at high rates but can slide past each other at lower rates.

    Thanks for the example!

It is also fun to slap the puddle of oobleck. The high shear from the slap prevents it from splattering!
